Welcome to A&N Electric Cooperative!

Welcome to A&N Electric Cooperative!

As a member of A&N Electric Cooperative, you are not a customer; you are an owner. That means you have an investment in coop business, and you get a say in leading the organization.

What is a Cooperative?
Cooperatives like A&N Electric Cooperative began in the 1930s. At that time, more than 50 years after the first American neighborhood was lighted, rural areas were being left in the dark because it was too expensive to provide electricity. Without power, the simplest of farm chores remained back-breaking work.

On the Eastern Shore, ordinary citizens set about to form a cooperative that would light up their portion of the peninsula. They went door-to-door to garner support, and eventually they secured funding from the Rural Electrification Administration that had been created by President Franklin Roosevelt in 1935. The newly formed A&N took over the Parksley Power and Coal Supply in August of 1940, and the effort to light the two counties of the Eastern Shore was off and running.
Today A&N Electric Cooperative is non-profit, with no outside investors. The same refundable $5 fee charged in 1940 is all that is required to become a member. Any profits are returned to customers in the form of capital credits.

A&N Electric Cooperative is an equal opportunity employer and provider.

Stay Informed
Because you have a voice in the cooperative, it’s important that you stay informed. Cooperative Living magazine is mailed to you ten times annually. This publication, distributed by the Virginia, Maryland & Delaware Association of Electric Cooperatives, includes state-level cooperative news, articles on unusual uses of electricity, and information about state and national legislation that could affect rural electric members. At the center of each issue you will find A&N Electric Cooperative news, which includes local stories and photographs.

A&N Electric Cooperative alone cannot represent your investment at state and national levels, so we hold memberships in several associations:

How to Handle Outages
If your service is interrupted:

  • Check your fuses or breakers to make sure the problem is not your own.

  • Find out if your neighbors have service. This gives the Cooperative some idea of the extent of the outage.

  • Call us and report the trouble. Dial 757-787-9750 or 800-431-2632. Be prepared to provide your name as it appears on your electric service bill, as well as your home telephone number.

  • We use a computerized outage system that enables us to predict the cause based on the consumers who have called. This system is designed to access your file by telephone number, so it’s important that we have your correct number on file so that we can ensure the fastest possible restoration of service.

  • If you have any information about the cause of the outage (tree or limb on the line, broken pole, etc.) please tell the dispatcher. This will also speed the restoration of your service.

Life Support Equipment
If someone at your home uses life-sustaining medical equipment, let us know as soon as possible. The information can be noted on your account if you provide a note from a physician. To report life-support equipment at your home, please call 757-787-9750.

Who to Call
To avoid delays, when you call, always have your account number ready. Please dial 757-787-9750.

Member Responsibility
When you move, you must call us to disconnect. Each member is responsible for any charges when the meter is in his or her name. It’s also important to report a forwarding address
