Welcome to the Cooperative!
Welcome to A&N Electric Cooperative. As a not-for-profit, member-owned utility, we are committed to providing safe, reliable and affordable electricity while supporting the communities of the Eastern Shore.
So, what is a Cooperative?
An electric cooperative is a not-for-profit, member-owned utility that provides electricity to homes and businesses in its service area. Unlike investor-owned utilities, cooperatives are owned by the members themselves, who elect the board of directors. The cooperative’s goal is to deliver reliable electricity at the lowest reasonable cost, returning any revenue beyond operating expenses to members as capital credits. Locally governed and community-focused, electric cooperatives prioritize reliability, affordability and investing in the communities they serve.
A&N Electric Cooperative is the Eastern Shore’s member-owned electric utility, headquartered in Tasley, Virginia. Founded in 1940, the cooperative brought electricity to the Shore, as well as Tangier and Smith Islands. Our mission is to provide safe, reliable and affordable power while enhancing the quality of life in the communities we serve.
A&N Electric Cooperative is an equal opportunity employer and provider.

Our Documentation
Because you have a voice in the cooperative, it’s important that you stay informed. Cooperative Living Magazine is mailed to you 10 times annually. This publication, distributed by the Virginia, Maryland & Delaware Association of Electric Cooperatives, includes state-level cooperative news, articles on unusual uses of electricity, and information about state and national legislation that could affect rural electric members. At the center of each issue you will find A&N Electric Cooperative news, which includes local stories and photographs.
For more updates, visit our Co-op News webpage where we share the latest announcements, project updates and important service information. You can also stay connected by following A&N Electric Cooperative on Facebook and Instagram where we post updates, photos and reminders about programs, events and community initiatives.
A&N Electric Cooperative alone cannot represent your investment at state and national levels, so we hold memberships in several associations:

If your service is interrupted:
- Check your fuses or breakers to make sure the problem is not your own.
- Find out if your neighbors have service. This gives the cooperative some idea of the extend of the outage.
- Call us to report the trouble. Dial (757) 787-9750 or text us at (855) 940-4016. If calling, be prepared to provide your name as it appears on your electric service bill, as well as your home telephone number.
- We use a computerized outage system that enables us to predict the cause based on the members who have called. This system accesses your account by telephone number, so it's important that we have your correct number on file to ensure the fastest possible restoration of service. The cooperative uses an automated metering system that alerts the utility when power is lost at individual homes, allowing crews to quickly identify affected areas even if customers cannot call in. However, if you are able to report your outage, the cooperative encourages you to do so.
- If you have any information about the cause of the outage (tree or limb on the line, broken pole, etc.) please tell the dispatcher. This will also speed the restoration of your service.
If someone at your home uses life-sustaining medical equipment, let us know as soon as possible. The information can be noted on your account if you provide a note from a physician. To report life-support equipment at your home, please call (757) 787-9750. You will also need to complete and return a Serious Medical Condition Certification Form (PDF).
When you move, you must call us to disconnect. Each member is responsible for any charges when the meter is in his or her name. It’s also important to report a forwarding address.
