As cooler weather approaches, it's a good time to give your home a quick once-over to ensure it’s as energy efficient as possible. A brief look around the outside of your home can reveal areas where small repairs could lead to big savings. Sealing cracks around windows with caulk, closing foundation vents and adding weatherstripping to exterior doors are easy ways to keep warm air in and your utility bills down.
Inside the home, consider reviewing your thermostat settings and inspecting for air leaks under baseboards or around fireplace dampers. Minor gaps can be filled with caulk, while larger openings may need expanding foam insulation to properly seal them. If you use an electric heat pump or HVAC system, make sure it's professionally serviced once a year and be sure to replace filters every month to keep it running smoothly. Don't forget to check your dryer vent — over time, lint buildup can reduce efficiency and pose a fire risk.
While electric space heaters are a common solution for added warmth, they can be costly to operate. Running a single 1,500-watt heater for eight hours a day could tack on an extra $50 onto your monthly electric bill.
Beyond the expense, space heaters can also be a fire hazard. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, these devices are linked to roughly 65fatalities and 150 injuries annually.
To use space heaters safely:
• Plug them directly into a wall outlet — never use extension cords.
• Keep them at least 3 feet away from flammable materials, like curtains or furniture.
• Never leave a space heater unattended or running while you sleep.
• If you plan to use one in a bathroom or other damp area, choose a unit that includes Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) protection.
With the holiday season approaching, invest in a timer for those decorative light and holiday inflatable displays. This will help ensure they are only operating during the desired time window. Also conduct a visual inspection of electrical cords and any extension cords. Replace any damaged cords prior to use.
